Ta-ta Tata! Hello British Steel?

Re:

Is that for real?

I thought they'd recently agreed to buy a lot of cheap Chinese stuff. Give them first dibs on building HS2. Also allow them to build our next Nuclear power plant.

Or am I mistaken ?

Re:

It's a question of preserving a seed corn element of industrial basing; like Defence equipment. It's probably cheaper to buy this equipment from our close allies rather than develop and build ourselves - but we don't owing to the requirement to maintain the capability for the future (amongst other motives).

I must admit, I've not heard a 'buzz' that nationalisation was on the cards, gov't sweetener for someone else to take it on perhaps but full nationalisation seems a bit last century!

Re:

Lot of noise in the construction industry not so long ago about cheap Chinese rebar not being up to much (which it isn't).

Contractors like cheap.. but they also like their buildings to stay upright.

Yay, something else for them to make an arse of. Add to deficit, NHS, housing, immigration et al.

For once could we please just have less government? It's really bad at doing things.

first ive heard and i live near scunthorpe, we are offering "up skilling courses" at work though.........seems the college and TATA have managed to bag some funding from somewhere...

Re:

Seems to me like the government want to lose this industry from what I can gather. Would there be no way back if it happened.
They don't sound interested in nationalizing the industry, block EU plans to put big tarrifs on cheap Chinese steel, and strengthening trade links with the Chinese.
Is it possible we will have absolutely no Industry in years to come, relying on other countries to supply us . And not stiff us in the process?

saw the news after, they dont seem too bothered, a lot of bollocks from opposition cabinets about who should etc. tough call imho, were damned if we do and damned if we dont. the smaller companies appear to be doing okay and they specialise in steel areas, such like sheffields etc, if the plants werent too big and old it would probobly be more of a viable investment

shame i cant buy part of scunny and start to make boutique and mass produced affordable cycles ;)

Does anyone really care?

We lost our motorcycle industry (bsa etc), car industry (rover, austin etc), coal industry, chocolicolate industry ( cadbury), electronics industry (mullard, marconi), bicycle industry (bsa, raleigh), ship industry yet we still plod on so long as we can buy cheap shit from china.
