The victim, a 27-year-old man, was cycling home just after midnight on 20 June.

The men punched and kicked him to the floor rendering him unconscious.

He was taken to Queen’s Medical Hospital where he was treated for cuts and bruising to his face.

The assault happened just after the England v Uruguay match and police believe the offenders could have been out watching the football earlier in the evening.

Any information could help the investigation please call Police on 101 referencing incident 000991-20062014 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Re:

I am not surprised at all. I was in Preston shortly before the match and had two incidents of being hassled, luckily one was at the supermarket where the security guards intervened, the other at a fast food outlet where some of the other customers backed me up long enough to get into the car and away. Drunken football fans can be complete planks, especially when they hear a foreign accent.

I'm not surprised I used to live in Newark and grew up a few miles away.

Football + booze I imagine
