Something the Ghost Rider thread made me think of...

As something of an opposite to that thread - films that were way better / memorable / interesting / enjoyable than you thought you would find them.

So those that suprised you, and were those discovered gems, that you almost discovered by accident, rather than any hype or recommendations.

For me:-

The Thirteenth Floor
Cypher
North by NorthWest
Grosse Pointe Blank
51st State
Evolution
One Night at McCools
Ravenous
A Chinese Ghost Story

there's quite a few but one that come to mind as its nearly Christmas is.... rare exports a Christmas tale. saw it last year, it'll be on film 4 soon

Earlier this year i watched dan in real life, loved it.
I also love nacho libre & galaxy quest.
But if i want to watch something more serious, it's either the shawshank redemption or the green mile.
Another gem of a movie i found was the majestic with jim carey.

I never understood the love for Shawshank/green mile type films. I find them overly sentimental, dull and formulaic.

I love Gross point blank though, and anything by the Coen brothers. Can't remember anything decent since No country for old men.

I hate Iron man 5, spiderman 6, The Hobbit part 9 and all that tosh. Cant they just make 1 decent film instead of increasingly daft sequels?

I loved The Big Lebowski - but couldn't really claim I discoverd it by surprise or organically, I'm sure I'd seen lots of comments before watching it.

So although I've enjoyed several other Coen movies, same applies, really - I only watched them as a result of a more popular one first.

I suppose I should include the first Hitchcock I ever saw, really - Rear Window, watched on a rainy afternoon in the school holidays in the 80s - I only watched it because I had nothing else to do.

As for Shawshank and the Green Mile - well I watched Shawshank because I'd read comments about it - and did enjoy it, but I'd not claim it to be a movie that I'd rave about. I watched The Green Mile, because my then girlfriend had read the book, but curiously wouldn't watch the film.

Another I can think of for criteria of this thread is Hudson Hawk - slated by critics and audiences alike as a vanity project for Willis, but regardless, I really enjoyed it. And not that it had true connection, but the name of Coburn's character, was that curious and oblique reference that led me to watch North by Northwest.

And oddly, I watched Vertigo, because of some reference in Twelve Monkeys - in itself, a reasonable inclusion in this list.

Tim robbins shawshank redemption is on TV all the time, its making me sick of a dam fine movie. However another classic Tim Robbins starring movie with an equally odd title is seldom seen, Hudsucker Proxy.
Not germain to the thread i admitt but needed to sound off about shawshank.

Unexpectedly brilliant; The Hunt.

Found it on netflix a few weeks ago. Stunning. Mads Mikkelsen is fantastic(Him from Casino Royale & Hannibal)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2106476/

I'd also add Oldboy to the list.

Both were total unknowns to me, and both embarrass anything that Hollywood churns out.

Coolio - kinda one of the things I was hoping to get out of the thread - some recommendations of good films, that perhaps you wouldn't naturally / easily discover.

Wild Target - Bill Nighy and Emily Blunt, very funny black humour
The spy who came in from the cold - Richard Burton, classic B&W Le Carre adaptation
