painting a varnished door

My front door needs a new look, water has got behind the varnish and stained the wood. My plan was to rub it down to give a key and use some undercoat to seal off the varnish, then paint over the top.

What do you think? will the paint be OK over the varnish with under coat or do I need to completely strip the varnish off?

Key the surface then start off with primer, then two coats of undercoat, then top coat. Flat back after the second undercoat.

Use good quality weather shield type paint for a longer lasting and better result.

Any areas where the water has got behind the varnish needs to be stripped back to bare wood and primed with aluminium primer. In fact, I'd prime the whole door with it then one coat undercoat, two gloss. De-nib and key between coats too.
