Sad news today... the death from a heart attack at 60 of comedian/actor Mel Smith.

makes you realise how short and precious life is, for me this was part of the newer generation of comedy in the 80s as a teenager, all the better as the parents didn't really get it

Ah yes it is a great loss :( in my house my parent's did get it and loved NTNON and Alas Smith and Jones just as much as we did as kids, actually it was my older sister that didn't get it.
