+1 on that, they used to get handed out to those that had actually done something for the masses, served their country in some way, or in recognision for their endless work for charity, not for doing something they want to do and lining their pockets in the process

They got handed out to anyone in the know of the right people in the past, as most are now as well. Let us not be silly.

Handing them out to sports stars makes more sense in terms of addressing public opinion.
