The left pedal goes in the left crank, not the right one.

That was very nearly a very bad (if not particularly expensive) mistake. JUST managed to save the crank by the skin of my teeth. It's only a '96 Alivio, but I'm going riding tomorrow.

Make sure it's pointing outwards as well. I know a guy who actually managed to put a pedal on the inside of the cranks without noticing his mistake.

Haven't managed that yet, thankfully!

I've put both cranks on pointing the same way before, though.

done that when the installed one rotates with gravity and you didn't notice... worst was trying to remove the BB after having a thought and thinking, I only need to remove the BB, but the non drive side cup can stay, so I don't need to remove the non drive arm...no idea how I didn't strip the thread out of the frame.

Hmmm, worst I've ever done to a BB was bend the spindle. While riding.

I work at a bike co-operative, too. You'd think I'd know better, right?
