My mother in laws sister has invited me and my family to her 70th birthday, she is paying for a restaurant dinner. My mother in law hates me, has never forgiven me for marrying her son rather than a midwife who wanted him and a PHD student who didn't  my brother in law who we are supposed to stay with supports his mother and so does my brother in law who has no children or much of a life  so the plan is we all go down and stay with my well off brother in law, who thinks my previous madness and psychiatric sectioning makes me A, a bad wife and B a bad mother. To say the least uncomfortable at the very best very uncomfortable  Do I go because her sister wants me there warts and all or do I stay at home?

Go for it, if for nothing else than to wind her up. I have a similar relationship with my mother in law. Told her she should get buried now as funeral costs are rising.

Go, but back-comb your hair with a teasel, wear a straight jacket and carry a can of spray cream to regularly top up the foaming at the mouth...

...oh yeah, and call everyone a c*nt!

You are going to be damned if you do and damned if you don't - there is no right answer to this. What does your husband want to do?

In all due seriousness, why put yourself through it?

Can never understand why people who ordinarily can't stand one another feel the need to socialise just because it's someone's anniversary of something?

When my grandparents died we were separate at the wake, the his and hers  I want to go to not offend Susan but will have to spend the rest with evil brother and sister in law, yet would like to meat their children one who is on my Facebook living in Switzerland doing very well, although cardiology appointments there are very pricey. Go NHS!! :D

The only one of my hubbies family that are OK, with the mad women, is his dad, he is awesome the best father in law in existence :D I will miss his death more than my own granddads, god don't tell my granddad that, 'struth should I have said that, old Catholic Guilt  my granddad said he would help me with my old fashioned sewing machine, I was too late he died riddles with cancer weeks after his first appointment :(

I cannot tell you how much of a top bloke he is, if you can imagine the worst wife ever then multiply it by the nth degree I mean infinity, you won't even come near to me, really!! and he has stuck by me through thick and thin. My mother in-law through her own fault went through an 8th what we went through if not less and she is still the most resentful woman in existence, I worship my husband for having stuck with me for what I've put him through, but I still find it difficult to accept his mother mainly because she was the failure but she blames her ex hubby who has tried so hard to be supportive over 50 years only to be subjected to abuse. bloody family madness mine are no better
