What's the difference between a ding and a dent?

Lots of others I can't think of at present.........

Is it a bit like estate agent speak? :D

This is not a NOS debate by the way!

I always add, when my blooming computers are doing what I want, a picture of the ding/dent with measuring tape for reference when selling anything anyway so whether I call it a ding or dent it doesn't make much difference, although my usual vocabulary supports dent, I didn't come across the word ding till I came here

Yes!

It's just elitist tribalism really, designed to belittle the newbie and hopefully prevent them from wanting to join the tribe.

a ding is the sound the bell makes, a dent is what happens when you tighten the bell too much.

Nice.

I always liked "shunt" implying the gentle coming together of two carriages leading to their movement as one, rather than the screech of tyre on road and the tinkle of headlamp.....
