I think because she was divisive.

If you bought into her politics, I think many loved her, in a sort of platonic way.

But she could also have a certain, inferred callousness, and her politics made a significant change, not just to the country, but to peoples' attitudes and behaviour.

Personally, I think she came to office at a difficult time, when the country needed a strong hand, and unpleasant, yet necessary things doing. I also think the manner in which she implemented those policies, was at plenty of instances, needlessly callous or without any evidence of empathy. I think some hate her for what she did, some hate her for the way she did it. I think that like many politicians and leaders, sometimes they go beyond what's required, and go that bit further, and push their own principles and values - and I think that's a significant aspect to why some hate her, and maybe she wouldn't have attracted such polarity, had she dealt with things slightly differently.

All the same, I think she (regardless of her politics) was an outstanding leader, and a ballsy prime minister.

When I left school in the 80's and started work with the NHS, Margaret Thatcher was in the early stages of ripping it to bits, a lot of my coleagues found this rather distressing and her name was mud.
I always felt she had a, its my way or the highway, approach to government, her cabinet were there to agree with her not discuss anything. Pushy and focussed on her vision of the future, no compromise, almost no democracy. Gets stuff done I'll grant you but grates on many of the people affecteds nerves.
She has been effectively dead to me from the point she was no longer in government and I will not bow my head to her memory but do object to my tax pounds going on her funeral !

She was only concerned with the rich getting richer and dumping on those lower down, that being a majority of the population. No doubt there will be those who will disagree and defend her but your own observation about many hating her rather confirms my view and similar ones. The only thing I can say in her defence is that every government since then has been much the same!

because she was a political leader, people always dislike the PM's. they make choices you hate, rarly any you like. that is their job after all. if they didn't do anything then you wouldn't remember them enough for it to matter.

Age 56.

Very interesting. Only 2 British Prime Ministers worth remembrance is Winston Churchill, and Margaret Thatcher.

Thatcher was a very commanding figure during the Falklands war, viewed with awe around the world.

Tough love anyone?

Thatcher took a country that was being held to ransom by overly powerful trade unions and unprofitable government companies and pushed Britain back onto the world stage as a major player. We actually ran a a positive rather than a deficit in government spending during some of her years.

Thatcher was instrumental in breaking the back of the Soviet Union.

I am no socialist however what Thatcher did to the working classes by crushing the unions has decimated the rights of workers for generations to come, and her further collusion in the Hillsborough cover up deserves nothing but utter condemnation and contempt. There are many misguided/evil/well intentioned leaders throughout the course of history that have shared the intensity of conviction that Thatcher did, so I don't necessarily see this as being something she should be applauded for either. A state funeral with full military honors is without doubt a step too far.
