I'm having loads of problems with my network at home - slow speeds, dropped connections, ip conflict messages. Doing a broadband speed check shows the problem isn't at the ISP end. I'm generally tech-literate, I know very little about fault finding networks but I'm willing to learn. Can anyone recommend a good solid reader-friendly resource - either online or a book - which would walk me through setting things up properly?

I'm sure there's expertise enough here to sort out your woes... maybe a brief description of your network and the devices it consists of would be helpful.

You shouldn't have conflicting IP addresses unless you've manually configured at least one device with a fixed IP address - either that or you have two DHCP servers on your network.

OK, here goes. I have a Netgear DG834G router connected to my ADSL line (service with Eclipse Internet). All devices are wireless to the router. Devices are:

- desktop
- work laptop
- netbook
- 2 x HTC smartphone
- Wii box

I have posted a series of screen grabs of my router screens here:

https://picasaweb.google.com/1144607467 ... 2719908066

The good news is there is no immediately obvious ip conflict - here are the ip addresses for all the devices except the wii connected at the same time:

desktop: 192.168.0.4
netbook: 192.168.0.6
laptop: 192.168.0.2
mobile 1: 192.168.0.5
mobile 2: 192.168.0.3

The weird thing is that the "attached devices" screen for the router shows no devices attached - even when everything above is connected and successfully pulling down web pages!

Any idea what's running on port 52317 (on your desktop?)

Other than that, it does look fairly normal to me at that end. Do all the computers have different names? (You can check from right-clicking my computer, selecting properties and it's under computer name)

Depending on where you live interference from other nearby wireless networks could be a problem - the DG834G just uses the channel it's set to and doesn't try avoiding any other nearby networks as some more recent routers do.

How old is the router? Yours is a very common one which have tended to last quite well but they do start to fail eventually... it might be worth getting hold of another router to check.

I am not techno switched on

my router started to have brain farts at about the 2 year mark, as they are so cheap I simply bought a new one and it cured my problems

No sign of 52317!

Regarding computer names I'm pretty sure they are all different but I'll collect them all and come back to you.

The wifi analyser on my phone typically shows a couple of very weak signals from neighbouring wifi - we're in a cul de sca in a village, and the houses are detached. I'm on channel 11 and at the moment all we have is one other on channel 6, and signal is -100 dBm against my wifi at -71dBm. And thats measured from the desktop, which is the furthest point from the router anything is likely to be.

The router is very old - prolly circa 2003 - but I have previously swapped it for a rather nasty Thompson thing we got with our last broadband package, and we still had problems. I'd be prepared to go and buy a Draytek or something if I thought it would solve the problem.

Have you tried changing channels? We were suffering similar issues, and changing channels stopped it.

Turn it all off, reset your router tooter and then spring everything up one at a time.

It could have been something (file sharing software maybe) that was running at one point and the router has just kept the forwarding rule in place even though it's not currently in use.

Ten years is a very long lifetime for an ADSL router, it could definitely be on the way out - as far as I can remember pretty much every Thompson branded router I've dealt ever with has been very nasty indeed so not sure your swapping it proves anything! Draytek are almost always very stable (certainly if the firmware is up to date), though I quite frequently find that they are a bit over-conservative when it comes to ADSL sync speeds. Quite a lot more expensive than the run of the mill rubbish though...

I should also ask... on which devices have you noticed the problems most, and are they all wireless? Also I've seen 3rd party firewalls cause some very, very strange networking issues on Windows, are you using the standard Windows firewall?
