How long does it take to speak to an advisor at the tax office about my tax code, been on hold for 45 minutes so far, what are they all doing arrrrrrggggghhhhhh

Self Assessment Tax Return deadline is at the end of this month. Quite possibly the worst time of year to try and call HMRC.

just finally got through to an advisor, who didnt know what he was doing, but finally managed to get it sorted out

Don't forget that unless something has changed you're paying for every minute that you're stuck waiting.

I've generally found them quite competent when I've eventually got through, but that expensive wait is infuriating...
