My wife and I have learned to knit, a couple of weeks ago 
I knitted my dad a scarf, as he's moving to Finland, and my wife knitted his wife a scarf.
We have consciously started making presents for family in the last few years. Generally they have what they need and want. So instead of spending money on tat, we invest time and effort to show we care, and think of them.
I built my wife a bike for Christmas, and we're making our own crackers

I'm definitely not an 'mentalist; most of what they spout is irritating misguided garbage at best and would be catastrophic if really acted upon, however... I HATE TAT. I find it slightly disturbing and depressing, just seeing it there on the shelves! What a waste of resources.
My everyday work is with technology, and yet I hate the pointless gadgets which are churned out and bought because there's a fashion for them, no matter how rubbish or expensive they are. Apples' current drive to make everything unrepairable and disposable is criminal in my view, car manufacturers are also up there for producing vehicles which are designed not to last more than a few years when the technology is there to make them last for decades.

Through my own stupidity and clumsiness, I ahve on the 2 iphone's I have owned, relaced 3 screens (about to do 4th), 3 buttons and a speaker module, all myself, all with spares from the internet, and following guides on Youtube...is actually really easy
There is an increasing "make-do-and-mend" culture out there,

I fixed my tumble dryer with spares bought off t'internet and am very proud of the fact. And it saved either me or my landlord the hassle and cost of getting a specialist called out to fix the thing, or worse still shell out for a replacement dryer.

OK, it is currently still possible to repair these things to a certain extent (and I have to do it fairly regularly myself)... but just look at the latest generations of Macbooks and iMac - all of them considerably more difficult (=expensive, for "normal" people) to repair or upgrade than the previous generations. Why? Purely because Apple don't want them repaired, they want to sell a new one.
It's a very unpleasant trend, especially when the rate of development and improvement in performance of these things has actually slowed to the point where older machines are still perfectly usable for most purposes...
