I caught a bit of this on BBC 3 last night, interesting program (well to me it was- my wife didn't agree!) about metal, history and development etc, covers iron, steel and Alu, explains about heat treatments etc and probably explains why we use certain metals for bike frames .

Should be able to watch on iplayer, not checked though .......

there are two others in the series, about plastics and ceramics. Both as interesting as the metals one. Definitely worth a watch (or download if you're that way inclined)
