I don't think you guys understand the workings over here. One only has to look at "America's past time" Major League Baseball. It came to light that a number of the long ball hitters (home run hitting specialists) were juicing. The US Congress held Congressional hearings on the matter (it would be akin to a bunch of Manchester players caught juicing being hauled in front of the House of Lords to testify in the matter). A Congressional hearing is a very serious matter (Google the McCarthy hearings into communism in 54. Peoples lives were destroyed, some committing suicide). Numerous of the MLB players admitted under oath that they used steroids, and were given slaps on the wrists along with their records being sanctioned (Mark Mc Guire). The ones proven to have lied under oath were given jail sentences (Barry Bonds to start). There are the same hearings going on over the drug use in cycling. To make matters worse for a few (Lance, George, Tyler), they were all effectively employed by the US Postal Service (which like RM, is a branch of the Federal Government) with strict no drug clauses in their contracts. If Lance wasn't so arrogant and came out and said "yes, I used drugs. We all use drugs. Every single team has a program. I won on a level playing field" he'd be looking at the same salap on the wrist that George and Tyler are looking at, but he continues to lie, and the US Federal Government is not amused. When the US Government is not amused with you, their army of lawyers goes about to destroy you. That's the way it works.

This is not over. He's going to get sued for breach of contract and have to pay fines and restitution, eventually. Mark my words.

While testimony from a few known drug cheats may be enough for the USADA to claim guilt I am sure that the US courts will need more than that to convict.

The justice system in the US surely still has to prove guilt, and Armstrong is entitled to 'plead the fifth'. So even if the US Postal service sue him over breach of contract they will still need some proof, and that is the one thing in this palaver that is sadly lacking.

Really sad but, equally sadly, not a surprise. William Fotheringham http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/20 ... rong-usada and Matt Seaton http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/20 ... ed-cycling are worth reading on the subject.

On a personal note, in the mid 2000s I became completely disillusioned with professional cycling and the Tour de France in particular - Landis and Vinokourov pretty much finished it for me after years of being excited by performances only to later find out that they were a sham. This cynicism only lasted so long and I've greatly enjoyed the last few years, including the Tour. Now this. Guess I'll have to go back to viewing it all through a jaundiced prism. And that will include our homegrown heroes I'm afraid.

On a side note, will USADA go after Carl Lewis properly now?

They should have two classes, 'Clean' and 'Doped'. Doped riders set off 1 hour after the Clean riders and it's still the first rider to the fnish line that wins. Not necessarily a great example for the kids, but it would be pretty cool

That will hardly work, what will stop the clean riders from taking drugs?
