Hey you guys, my son has outgrown his Merida Dakar 220, and I'm looking to replace it with a 24" MTB, light as possible, with front suspension forks.
Has anyone got any recommendations for said bikes?
Thankee kindly.

I recommend building one yourself from a donor bike, son loves it and it gives you choice over components you wouldn't normally have and usually costs less too. I built my son's for around £150 - specialised frame, p2 forks.

it makes it unique to them too which they like.

For 24inch the forks are a bit limited but there is an RST capa with lockout and dampening adjust - I can't find it now though on a quicksearch.

If money is less of an issue this does look like a nice package but I guess the forks will weigh a ton....

If you want off the shelf lightweight then Ilsabikes are probably your best bet. Most good kids bikes weigh in around 12kg/27lbs but an islabike is only around 22lb as it has rigid forks.

My eldest currently has an Islabike - and think it was a good choice, because it will get used by my youngest.

Don't know whether I'd always go with them, though, because as they get older, it's a balance between getting them a decent bike, and the bike they get being the type they want.

Yep. Totally agree. We all know the sprogs suspension forks are not up to much - but they want them to look like their dads bikes!!!!

Got a 16" 1990 Lava Dome for the next step on from the Isla.
The oldest already has learned to call most cheap bikes 'gaspipe nasties'
Mind, the younger one likes my rigid singlespeed!

Maybe dad should be riding rigid too :)
I do.

He's more taken by what he sees other kids riding, though - like BMXs.

I'm not going to try and impose my values on him, I've bought him decent bikes up to now, because I knew best, and up to this point, that probably mattered more. But at this age, he might as well have the type of bike he wants.

Whatever I get, will be decent, because in doing so up to now, haven't had to buy additional bikes for tearaway no. 2.
