Turns out i have become a complete luddite. E readers. Partners birthday in a couple weeks ( i run it so fine eh!) and i though an e reader would be good since she has been reading those porn books recently (all 3 in a week i think it was).
Have no idea where to start! Budget will be around £60 but can go to a little more i expect. Dont mind second hand but would need to be good condition.
And pretty much after that im stumped. Turns out they dont just read books?

(Oh and using a format where i can easily source books).

Amazon Kindle.

The original one is down to about £80 now and has by far and away the best selection of books.

The Kindle has an E-Ink Screen (as lots of other E-Readers do), which basically means that text is pin-sharp and the device can easily be used outside in sunlight (unlike iPads and other tablet devices with LCD/LED screens).

If you just want an E-Reader, plain and simple, then you can't go far wrong. There are other E-Readers which have more bells and whistles on them, but at a cost.

EDIT - I should mention that my Girlfriend has a Kindle, and it's permanently attached to her hands now. She swore she'd never get one but now she won't be without it.

I have a Sony PRS-T1 (not to be mistaken for the Whyte PRST-1 MTB  ) and am quite happy with that.
Takes .epub and .pdf, by far the most common book formats. 2GB internal space (that's enough for more than a thousand .epub books), and if that's not enough it accepts micro SD cards as well.
Battery lasts about 40-50 hours, so you can take it with you on holiday without worrying too much.

Sure, a new one is above your budget. However you might be able to find a good second-hand one.

Is that the current WiFi one that replace the previous ("Kindle 3") with the keyboard?

And another vote for a Kindle, not far off the budget mentioned, and probably easiest for older relatives to get comfortable with.

I used this:

http://www.toptenreviews.com/configurator/ebook-reader-review/

That gave me a kindle touch and a kindle dx as best choices with the sony and nook not far behind (but nook looks like a US thing).

Will be just an e reader. Dont need a tablet and not sure why they are included as that seems a by product of a tablet to me, not a main feature.

£89 new. It cant be that easy to find though surely?

This one:

Cant see whether external storage aswell, as that would be good to get books from other places possibly - so not fully tied in with amazon.

I see the picture with the light, are they not backlit so much?

You can side-load books using Calibre.

Don't think there's any options with external storage, and the newer Kindle you link to there, doesn't have as much storage as the Kindle keyboard it replaced.

Don't know about the very latest from Kindle, but the model you're linking to, and the keyboard one aren't backlit.

Very readable compared with other types of screens, though. Whereas my tablet screen may not be much use in bright sun, my Kindle is and is completely readable. I tend to use the Kindle app on my tablet in the dark, though, as it's already backlit, and I can use the reverse colours (ie black background, white text) using the Kindle app, and it seems to be easier on the eyes, with less glare, in the dark.

I recently bought a Kindle 4 and I'm very pleased with it.

However, it is purely a reader, there's no "text to speach" capability, no MP3 player, no additional storage. This suits me fine, but if these things might be useful, you might want to look at the Kindle Touch, or something else with those features.

Something else that might be worth noting; you can install a dictionary on a Kindle and you can look up a word within a book instantly, which can be handy. This is quicker to do with a touch screen, so if you read the sort of books where you might want to use this feature quite often, that might be worth bearing in mind.

I've read books on both my Android phone and the Kindle. The E-ink display on the Kindle is more like reading from paper, but reading from the LCD screen on my phone doesn't seem to bother me much personally, so I wouldn't let that sway you into going for an E-ink device over a tablet; unless you regularly want to read outside in bright sunlight. The big benefit of the Kindle over the phone, is that you can read several books on a single charge, whereas a phone or a tablet will probably only last a day, perhaps less.

I had one of the Sony ones bought second hand from cash converters, mp3 support and all you do is drag and drop files. The battery lasts forever too and you get web browsing. I also hear that there are sites where you can download books free of charge (ahem). A mate gave me a copy of a Sci-Fi/Fantasy libray around 15,000 books on pdf, I'll never have time to read a tenth of that but pretty much everything up to 2008 is on there.
In the spirit of sharing if anyone wants to send me an 8gb memory stick......
