Bitcoins

M-Power

Old School Grand Master
Anybody invested yet ? I can see the huge potential upside of these cutting out commission etc but I just believe the powers that be and International financial institutions will take back control over it in the med to long term, thus destroying its long term growth potential.

I'd reckon it's incredible global success has frightened a fair few governments, who will now be looking at ways to destroy/control Bitcoin. This will destabilise the 'currency', people will become unsure about it's security, and it's value will drop.

I could well be rong, but I'd say that by the time summat like this has come to public attention, it's heyday is already over...

The horse has bolted. Go and look for a new horse.

Bitcoins are a monumentally stupid idea, the only interesting thing about them is watching their fans fall into every known economic trap, scam and pitfall within the space of a couple of years.

It's not even really a currency, given nobody buys anything with it except drugs and child porn, and getting it exchanged into real money at anything resembling its supposed value is ludicrously difficult.

It's basically stocks and shares, except instead of buying into a company, you're buying into the concept of buying stocks and shares itself. Which leads to the very act of trying to sell the things actually devaluing them, which goes a long way towards explaining why the market crashes every five minutes.

On the other hand, it is a comedy goldmine. Forever amused by the endless parade of technically inept wannabee gangsters it seems to attract. What's the Silk Road guy been up to? Soliciting assassinations? Daft bugger used an email address with his real name in it.

+1 the concept is radical and different but too revolutionary. Govts and Banks, not to mention the Police and other institutions will find a way to shut it down.

The only difference, on a technical level, is that real money isn't something advertised on its ease of counterfeiting.

Good lord, imagine if the bank of england handed out instructions on how to print your own fifty quids.

Re:

You do all know that "real" money has no more intrinsic value than these new fangled crypto currencies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_money

Money is "magicked" into existence, either by central banks, or by commercial banks when they lend money. It only has value, because everyone agrees it does. It is in theory backed by the government or state, but when the balloon goes up and a state or a government collapses and can no longer back it's currency, it can all become instantly worthless.
