I'm thinking of trying Kayaking in Yorkshire.

River Don, local canals near Doncaster, Scunthorpe, Selby etc.

Much like my Retro Touring idea:

Nice and easy stuff for me and the wife. We are planning on buying a two person fat style kayak and paddling for a day then camping out, to return the next day. Carrying a tent and just enough food and water to cover two days. Also planning on just going out for the odd couple of hours. There's loads of water around Doncaster and some of the Yorkshire riders have been around this way on my 'Doncatraz' rides.

I thought I'd ask the Retro group before venturing out as I'm sure some of you have tried it or are canoeing / kayak hobbyists.

Re:

Sounds like a great idea - I've paddled most of the canals around Doncaster - although I wouldn't paddle on the Don - it's tidal and pretty filthy down river from Doncaster.
I can recommend the Stainforth - Keadby canal, it cuts through some very pleasant countryside and there aren't many locks getting in the way. The "New Junction" section between Stainforth and the Aire & Calder is also really pleasant, quiet and I think just the one lock. Aire & Calder on the whole between Goole and Knottingley is ideal, but gets a bit industrial after.

I'd give it a go, there are plenty of quiet spots to camp - let us know how you get on.

Not done much myself for years but a couple of good friends are kayak and canoe instructors and go out regular. I do know that when they take camping gear they take the canoes instead of the kayaks to make it a bit more enjoyable.

Always wanted to canoe down some rivers in the Rockies for a week or two for some real adventure.

Another thing i remember is a lot of the rivers they go on are broken up by private, was going to say land, but water, i suppose   which makes canals a better choice for longer days out i should imagine!?

Excellent tips. Iv'e added them to the list. Thanks.

A little research has found two perfect parks to go to learn the basics, they both run tuition sessions and are on our doorstep:
