Asking for help, as always :(

The story is that one of the speaker crossovers in my car went kaput. I know the problem, I can solder, but need to know if I can buy the parts, and what the hell I'd search for if I can.

The bottom left capacitor (?) needs replacing (if you move it with your finger it cuts in and out, and the solder joints are 100%)

The right hand large coil of wire also needs replacing; one of the legs that you solder through the PCB has snapped off, but right up against the coil.

Any suggestions?

The capacitor will be easy to replace, the coil (inductor) less so as it probably won't have a value marked on it. If you can get a circuit diagram from Focal you would be able to order a replacement easy enough. Falcon acoustics are the go to place for crossover components - they wind their own inductors, very high quality stuff, and also a good source of advice in my experience.

Failing that you might be able to unwind a bit of the fresh wire, clean it up and resolder it - it would be close enough in value I would have thought. Or measure the inductance of the good coil in the other crossover to get a replacement. Inductance meters can be had fairly cheap these days.
 
hmm.. I like what your'e saying, but looking at 'cheap inductance meter' it may be cheaper to source a new complete crossover...?

I think unwinding it may not be a starter as it's broken from the middle most wire, and would require re-spooling the whole thing .

Would it be possible to buy the wire and re-spool?

Electronics components should have the values marked on them. Capacitors will have a voltage, for example 100V, and a capacitance in Farads, e.g. 33uF - 33 micro farads, some types of capacitors also have a polarity: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrolytic_capacitor

The coil things are inductors and they have a value in measured in henrys, so 20mH is 20 mega henrys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inductor

You should be able to find replacement parts of equivalent type and value and possible the same package type/footprint; some parts may have the same value, but are available in several package types/sizes to fit different circuit board hole spacings.

As it turns out, it's £20 to get a replacement, so I'm going down that route - I've had a few problems with this particular crossover, including dry solder joints, so think I may be better off just getting a replacement.

But I've learnt a few things, thanks all!
