My Dad had a 900 Carlsson, like this:

He'd previously had a number of very ordinary Vauxhalls, so I was quite surprised when he bought a Saab, especially such a flashy one with skirts and a spoiler.

I only drove it once and it was pretty nippy, but what really struck me was how quirky it was. It was front wheel drive, but the engine was mounted longitudinally, the windscreen was miles in front of you, it had a vast boot and the doors wrapped under the sills, so that when you opened them the edge of the car was right next to the seat, which made it easier to get in and out. It was really solidly built as well. Given that they're fairly rare, I wonder if he should have kept it, it would probably start to appreciate in value at some point if they haven't already.

Stupidly, I gave away a 3dr T16S aero back in 2004.... and always regretted it.

Got myself this one now! - it's a 2dr T16S. Most are 3dr like the 1 in xerxes picture.
Saab made approx. 170 2dr variants for the UK market. There's not many left now.
Mine's going the get the Carlsson treatment like the picture above.
As for appreciating in value.... they're already on the up. Classic cars magazine has a top 10 appreciating classics feature with a red 900 Carlsson.

Ive had one of these and while i absolutely loved it it died due to Saab's I own servicing- if the sump gets full of crud it can do serious damage to the engine. Had to sell mine for parts as the cost of repair was similar to the value of the car. If there is any servicing with it see if it is through a Saab specialist who would have done this. Mine had a full Saab history- they didn't bother. Irony is it isn't that difficult a thing to do- there's plenty of info on the web.

Re:

I've had a few Saabs, the first was a 900 turbo - the original classic type' the most recent, now sold, 9-5 Vector estate. I don't like diesels, expensive to maintain of they go wrong and running costs aren't just about fuel economy.

My bike hauler is a 31 yr old Volvo estate, currently undergoing a mild restoration. It has been in the family from 6 months old - great cars, but not the FWD one's they're no better and no worse than any other white good.

For the Ford bashers (read snobs) Mondeo's are excellent, I've had a few - ST24, and the Mk 3 is a really good if you can get a good one.

Jon.

P.S I also have a Mercedes 500E, the one handbuilt by Porsche, and drive a Mk3 Mondeo everyday.

Oh great! Now I am obsessing about getting an old Merc again.

What a car!

Love the Mondeos too, and have had a good number pass through my hands.
