I won this on eBay recently, as a BIN, and was curious to see the part in the metal.. It turned up earlier today and has me very excited about its origins.. It is New Old Stock and came with its original box & instructions; the box has been altered to read RDM950SS..

Checking the Mombat website for the 1996 XTR Gruppo, the Rear Dérailleur doesn't have an Uber Short Cage model..

Are there any Shimano Aficionados that can shed light on this release?

looks sort of like a dura ace cage, except for the bolt on part near the bottom jockey wheel. for downhillers running roadie cassettes maybe?

Yeah maybe.. There is no Max nT text on it but surely won't take more than 26T? That should work okay with a Compact Chainring set up front tho..

That Pivot Bolt is very M910esque too..

road mechs are usually 27t

the M95x rear derailleur cage is a bolt on part - it might be worth checking if DA from the same period is the same, then you'd know the most likely candidate for the donation

As I wrote while ago (in Martin's thread)

My one, 952 series (so dedicated for 9s):

As I know it was DH version - Shimano did one or two Years (2000, not sure about 2001) single-crank XTR crankset, carbon V-booster, and rear mechs (they were using Dura Ace cages with riveted protector near lower jockey)
Cranks and booster You could see in catalogues, mech were not published there...
Scan with DX XTR cranks

It's running with XTR 12-32 cassette and dual 29-44 chainset (I've to make a little modyfication of mech if I wish to use whole spectrum of gears)
But, I'm surprised - never seen M950 with this cage!
