1992 Alpinestars Cro Mega DX build

I’ve started a few threads since joining last week, I’ve asked a few opinions and asked advice but thought I’d just bring it altogether.

Having asked ‘factory or trick’ I have decided to build the bike how I really would have (within reason) when I was 18 as I was when I first bought it.

My plans are to try to keep it period but pretty much upgrade everything with a few purple parts.

I’m having the frame chromed so there’s no clashing with the purple, going for black rims and all black tyres.

I have my eyes on some hubs but not tempting fait yet!

I’ll keep the thread updated. I know I’m not going to please everyone - usually in quite a purist as I have been when I’ve been restoring cars but this time I’m throwing caution to the wind.

Finally got to my parents to pick up the bikes. Forks are going to need a strip and rebuild.

Car packed up ready for home. The Orange isn’t as mint as I left it. Turns out my brother has been using it so needs a few bits to make it right.

Got them home and need to get the Alpinestars stripped and out of the kitchen before the misses comes home and punches my head in. The sink is not a parts wash apparently. Everything came apart pretty easily - crank was tough and there are still a couple of bits of the headset still soaking (see new wanted post)



Whilst stripping it I realised it was a cutting edge 14 speed rather than the 21 due to only one tooth remaining of the smallest chainring.

The crank has come up well - ordered some new bolts to go with it.



Next job is cleaning the Manitous waiting for the tool to strip and refurb the elastomers - ordered some new ones today. These are rock solid and smell a bit funky when I cracked the top off

First attempt at the forks has brought them up pretty well - a bit of elbow grease, a scourer (not very abrasive) and some elbow grease (the product)

Great Job.... I wanna see what awaits you inside when you pull them apart.

this could get interesting and very sticky - Judy elastomers go to crumbs and generally clean up quickly
Manitou's are like sticky half eaten sweets the kids drop down the side of your car seats that you find weeks later on a seriously hot day, but rolled in a jelly goo that sticks worse than Napalm and refuses to wash off your hands

Elastomers came yesterday and decided to table them today. Took the caps offf and a strange pong hit me.


The stench was worse inside the assembly - out of the 6 elastomers and 2 rebound rubber there was 2 1/2 elastomers but the others were replaced with sticky crap.



I used some tar and glue remover which actually made light work of all the goo - that and I ruined a couple of tea towels and 3 kitchen cloths



The boiling tap came in handy to get the remaining crap out of the fork leg.

Back together and just needing a bit of a clean
