Today, my baby turns 21 (now with more photos).

Saturday 8th April 1995: I left the girlfriend's house to buy my first mountain bike – a Marin Pine Mountain.

At the dealer (Channels, just outside Chelmsford, Essex) the girlfriend suddenly announced she wanted a bike too. I had to split my budget, and bought myself this Palisades Trail.

Over the years that followed I'd be out on it almost every weekend. During those years I also made many, many upgrades. Until eventually the bike was almost unrecognisable.

Then one evening in 2013, I thought about restoring it to how it once was. And I discovered Retrobike.co.uk.

Unlike the bikes I've restored since then, this one isn't restored to catalogue spec – but to how I had it back in the day (around 1996/97).

The girlfriend is long gone, as is Channels. But the Marin remains. Its restoration has been slow, but I wasn't in a hurry.

And while some may question the time, effort and expense of restoring a bike that isn't anything special, it's special to me – and that's what matters.

Happy birthday buddy!

Nice.

My own Zaskar is a bit like that, bought in 1994, stolen, recovered a year later, sold, bought back and now sits quietly waiting for the next summer ride.

Re: Today, my baby turns 21.

Love it. I have a Palisades, bought in 1991. It's now serving as a tourer and remains the bike I wolud part with last. Did 190 miles on it last week, touring in the Netherlands.

Thanks for the comments guys. Glad you like it. :D

And Rick, fingers crossed that GT rocks up soon.
