This time it will undergo a full repaint, Custom Paints red paint has been ordered, will photograph and trace the original custom painted decals before sanding the frame back to replicate.

Parts are being procured, Araya RM20-XT rims, Nos XT 731 U-Brake and M730 shifters have already landed, but the remainder of decent M730 parts required will take time I know.

Searched this site and the web and this bike seems to be a pretty rare beast, according to the 88 Cannondale brochure 'The Red Shred is the best mountain bike in the world' well I can dream can't I  ! So will try to build as close to original as possible.

Happy New Year everyone!

Re:

:D my old Cannondale,i'll be following this to see it finally come to life. If your doing a catalogue spec i've still got the hite rite somewhere.

Re: 1988 Cannondale SM1000 Red Shred

Cheers Chris, if it's a black hite rite I would definitely be interested.

Forks sanded back and primed today

Glad this one went to a good home. Based on your previous work I'm sure it's going to be a peach :)

Re: 1988 Cannondale SM1000 Red Shred

Well as I managed to catch a horrible flu type man cold and will now be staying in tonight I have time to write a quick update on the dale.

Hand painted graphics traced and a fat couple of coats of paint stripper have gone on the frame earlier, tough paint on this ol' girl, will have to finish off next year now.

She's naked.... ;)
All looks in great condition, apart from a few scars from chain slap and suck and a light top tube cable rub which I will use aluminium filler to correct before priming. Will also drill out and replace all bottle cage rivnuts as one is spinning.

Re:

Looking good so far, wish I had the space (and skills) to do this level of work myself. Look forward to seeing this one progress.

P.S. I copied the idea of tracing the decals from this build for my Orange Prestige so cheers for that :D

Re:

Not an easy work you begin :
You can find the 1988 Decals and the good matching red in vintagecannondale.com. But the white and black graphic design were made by the painter'shand and are not decals, if I remember.
You should use a roller painting for white and some black brushstroke.

I will follow your thread

Re: 1988 Cannondale SM1000 Red Shred

Cheers Dynacol will post some more progress pics by the end of the week, frame is getting a good fettle before the primer goes down.

Paint arrived today crappy iPad camera doesn't do it justice but it is really vibrant, especially compared to the dull paint that came off.

24pouces, no fear decals came with the frame and custom paint has been traced and sponging will be practiced before application.
