What is this?

Hi

I came across this bike the other day and purchased it as a bit of a project; it looks like someone threw a lot of money at it in the 90's but I have no idea what the frame is, it's got a makers stamp on the rear brake guide of Alfton and it's made of 7005 Aluminium. Does anyone know if they were a brand of their own or did they make frames for other companies?

The crankset is unusual, it's shimano FC-MT60 which appears to have been drilled and polished, sadly the left arm has been replaced. Does anyone know if this was factory or a common modification?

Thanks

Dan

Looking at the welding and details and the rear cable stop. Mine looks very much like this. My frame number is different set out, but mine is one of the first. Id say a Merlin Malt 1. with ahead fitted!

I'm usually wrong though, sure someone else can advise!

Nice bike, lots of potential. Mine also has much purple ano!

Re:

I was thinking Merlin but they seem to have a different set up for the seat stays. I think the closest things I can find are early Univega's and Rocky mountain Vertex or Oxygen.

Re:

After a bit of digging I think it's most likely a KHS alite of some kind.

That's great to know about the drilling, I should be able to get a left hand crank and replicate it. Thanks

Or the left hand crank failed because of the drilling.....

True, fashion before function

Absolutely!

Re:

There is plenty of metal in the outer chainring above the bolts that can be drilled out.
