I bought this back in July and haven't had the time to properly look the frameset. Its a size 16" and came pretty much stock apart from the wheels which the seller didn't want to pack with the frame to save on carriage. So a couple of weeks back i stripped the frame down from her poorly looking Suntour XCE groupo for a better understanding on the condition and what to put back on components wise.

There's quite a few scrapes and chips in some areas on the frame with a slight amount of rust and yet in some parts the frame is mint!!The worst is on the drive side seatstay and guessing maybe its from a set of Eveready light bracket thats twisted on the paint work  I did manage to regrease the headset and bb and must say although the bb was covered in shite and is heavy as the titanic has cleaned up lovely and is buttery smooth

My first thoughts were to just take all the cheapo Suntour off and just add a more modern Shimano M737 XT groupset which ive got spare from a Roberts build but would be completely un period and just leave all the scrapes and scratches / nice pub bike  .Or at least a bike i wouldn't be to bothered in looking after if you know what i mean  but have since had a slight rethink and have decided for a more period build and to try and sort the scrapes myself fairly cheaply using a primer and paint i bought from Halfrauds yesterday  The paint isnt a bad match but isnt identical but will do,its still a pub bike right! So i removed the rust with some fine wet and dry for starters and then in a few days clean and degrease it ready for some paint :D

Here's some pics of the frame minus the rust as forgot to take some photos beforehand and apologies for the shite photos but low light/camera phone and me running out of time for the school pick up wasn't helping :?

Re:

Updated...

Well i thought i better finish this as its been sat around far too long doing nothing.I wanted a Suntour groupo and ended up buying a donor bike for the mix of xc comp and xt stuff and sourced a few cheap NOS bits along the way.Component wise it's not period with microdrive but beggar's cant be chooser's.

The frameset never got any paint touch ups regarding the scrapes and ended up going over them with clear nail lacquer and then using some carnauba wax mixed with polish to give it a high gloss finish.I'm happy with the outcome, keeping the used patina look this build was always going to be a low cost build..

I had a slight hiccup regarding my disc wheel cover being ever so slightly too big in diameter for my newly built Mavic M7 rim's so at the minute no fluro disc wheel   I might see if i can trim it down a few mm by sanding it unless anybody else has any better idea's....
