Orange Clockwork (1992)

Here is my 1992 Orange Clockwork - some way off completion but I'm hoping to update this thread as I go.

Origins

I was fortunate to come across this poorly Clockwork on eBay and after a short wait won her for the princely sum of £28 - only just a bit more than what was being asked for postage! Anyway, a few days later I had received the frame and her original threaded forks.

Condition

The bike is covered in chips - in some places it looks more like the surface of an asteroid pitted planet than a bike frame.

Black Tange decal: Not much left to look at.

An overall look.

Vital stats

Frame size: 17 inch
Seatpost diameter: 26.8mm
Seattube diameter: ?
Headtube internal diameter: 1 inch
Headtube length: ?

Tange decal

It's not exactly the same but for the purpose of my build it will do - I don't even know if it's a reproduction, I just think it looks really good - and that's enough for me.

Seating

I managed to find a Hope quick release seat clamp - it originally had a band but having used just the skewer it works perfect. Also a good fit aesthetically, to my eyes anyhow.

The seatpost is a 26.8mm Thomson Elite - a classic in my mind.

A seat is on the way. Opted for a modern Charge Spoon seat, in a rather fetching brown :|

Re:

Up front

Finding a new 1" threadless headset was a challenge - luckily I came across this Cane Creek unit new for about £30 on eBay. You'll also notice there is a Hope Space Doctor in the top photo.

On top of that stack is a Funn stem and Truvativ riser handlebars.

Re:

Drivetrain

Nothing exotic, but got an 8 speed Shimano XT rear mech off eBay today - little battered, but I like to think it has 'character'. It needs new Jockey Wheels, so will probably be continuing the gold anodised theme here.

An 8 speed cassette with Massive'O'ring; or MegaRange as Shimano call it. Can't hurt, will be useful for that bloody hill in Maldon I guess.

Re:

Wheels

I'm not going to pretend I don't like the Mavic's in the photos above, but they actually belong on a different frame of mine.

My current idea is that this restoration should be retro with modern flourishes; I'd like those who know a bit about bikes to grimace slightly while trying to work out what's going on!

So I like the idea of retro rims, complete with braking surfaces - just for the aesthetic.

Not sure how this happened - but the idea to use gold anodised Ti bolts, seemed like a good one to me!

Want a Gold Hot Rod handlebar..?

Mmm, my heart is saying yes, yes, yes.

But my wallet is resisting, I'd have to change out the stem as well if I went with non-oversized handlebars. Plus I really need the height at the front for this bike to ever have a chance of being used.

How much do you want for them?
