Well I have one now. I thought about repainting it and I thought no leave it as is. This is also a weight weenie project but on a budget!

Frame 1737g with steel canti bosses and the seat post collar (it is a very odd size). I have Ti canti bosses on there way which will save a few grams.

The cranks I had in mind are Middleburn RS2's which weighed 559g but I found my spider is bent and two of the spider bolts are seized and will need drilling out. So I need a new spider for that.

In the meantime I have a M730 crank 170mm and I have fitted alloy bolts and I removed the inner ring -641g. the chainrings are now Middleburn 46/34T as these were 20g lighter than the shimano rings.

I have some dura ace Ti crank bolts on there way (ebay bargin) which weigh 17g I think.

The seat post is a PMP Ti effort which I will have to run a coke can shim -191g

The BB is currently a Shimano UN52 68x118mm -311g I would like a lighter one but that will depend on the final crankset used.

Shifters M737 with alloy barrel adjusters and alloy clmap bolts 381g

The cantis are a non name effort as they are quite light. With Jagwire basic pads and ti anchor bolts, alloy boss bolts and shimano link wire they weigh 344g. I maybe able to save a few more grams by using a traditional straddle cable and an alloy hanger, we'll see.

Rear wheel is a 28H Mavic X517 rim on a M950 hub with Sapim Race spokes and alloy nipples -870g
Front wheel has the same spec -687g
I have not finished the wheels yet.

Velox rim tape will be about 30g but I might use a lighter alternative - veloplugs do not fit well I have tried. I might use a electrical tape but three rounds of it.

Tyres will be Conti X-king supersonics which weigh 880g for a pair.
Tubes Latex of course 240g for a pair.

Cassette HG70 11-28 -311g ran out of money would like an M950 cassette but I cannot afford one at present.

Chain will be a KMC 8-93 I assume 300g but it maybe a few grams lighter.

Bars/stem new Race face XC ran out of money so these will have to do for now, currently 377g but with some Ti bolts the stem will get lighter. I might also cut the bars down.
I would really like a Ti bar and stem for this.

Saddle well I have a few but I am tempted to use a Sella Italia SLR XP as it is 190g and I use one on my road bike and I like it. Too me they are cheap so hopefully it will survive XC riding.

Front has not arrived yet but it is a XTR M950 top pull 34.9mm mech. I have an XC Pro front mech as well which is 130g. I am hoping the XTR mech will ligter I think is from WW listings.

Rear mech is a M950 medium cage. I have so far fitted a alloy barrel adjuster but I could just remove that I suppose and I will be fitting an alloy pivot bolt. I would like to by the fibrelite carbon cage and carbon pulleys for it too. -206g currently.

Token lock on grips are 120g.

I will assume 300g for cables and casings but it may be a bit less.

Forks are Pace RC31 and the canti bosses will be Ti when those arrive. - Currently 777g with star nut but I may be able to cut the steerer down a bit.

Token 1 1/8" threadless headset is 117g.

Spacer will be carbon and I will run as few of these as possible.

XT M780 pedal -340g I don't do old MTB pedals.

Seat post Q/R 35g. I will drill a bigger hole through the clamp though and fit an M8 bolt, that will save some weight.

XTR M950 hub Q/R are 119g.

Total weight should be about 9.5kg when done. I aim to get it down to 9kg in the long run.

When the budget allow lighter parts will appear and everything will be weighed.

Re: Trek 8900 project

This will be interesting, you could save a load of weight just fitting some foam grips, Grab-Ons for example, just an idea, good luck with it though!

Re: Trek 8900 project

Well more things weighed today.

I have added a inner ring to the M730 crankset (middleburn 24T) and that weighs 672g now. The M730 BB I took of the Scott Pro Racing weighs 320g. The 12-25T HG50 cassette with alloy lockring weighs 304g.

The X-King supersonic tyres are lighter than I thought at 411g for the pair. The Inner tubes are 251g now I have weighed them. The front wheel is build and weighs 690g so 3g of the predicted weight.

So I will assmeble it tomorrow and I expect a weight of 9.5kg. One day I will buy a a lighter BB for it maybe a Royce Ti or cheaper Sugino with alloy cups, some light bars and a light stem but they will have to wait. Also there is 12-25T Ti cassette I could buy from a U.S supplier, that would be light. Another 500g could be easily taken off with enough cash thrown at the bike.

The Scott is now a single speed and weighs 10.17kg without any weight saving tricks.

Not happy with the shimano link wire - it is too long leading to a hard lever. I need to change this to a tekro alloy cable hanger and conventional straddle cable. I prefer my stradle cables low for improved mechanical advantage. Still feels good to sit on, now I just have to ride it.
