This is my 97 GT Zaskar Frost Red. Had her from new. Frame was bought early in 98 from Supercycles in Nottingham. they only had 19" left and i really needed an 18", but the price was too good to pass up. came with a Tioga headset which they fitted while i waited, and Kore Stem.

the group-set is XT. I bought the brakes and levers at the Bike Show in the NEC, and the rest of the group from Merlin when they were still based in Ormskirk.

I originally ran a set of Balistics forks until i picked up a set of RC36 Evos at the 99 Bike Show (got a free Marin Holdall too). the RC36's have an alloy steerer. cant remember if they came with this or i bought it.

Wheels were hand built by Dave Hinde in Northwich.

She's been laid up in the shed at my caravan for a few years but i brought her home and rebuilt her. Ive made a few changes at the front end.

Managed to pick up a set of NOS decals from Ebay. Havent put them on yet. just got rid of the old stickers I put on (apart from the Datatag stickers)

Frame: 97 GT Zaskar Frost Red 19"

Fork: Pace RC36 Evo

Brakes: XT M-739 (black solid parallel pull link)
Brake Pads: XT
Brake Cables: Jagwire (replaced old XTR)
Cantilever cable hangers: N/A
Brake Levers: XT M-739

Shifters: SRAM Attack (replaced Sachs Waveys)
Front Derailleur: XT FD-M738 (compact)
Rear Derailleur: XT RD-M739 GS (Tacx Stainless Bearing Jockey Wheels)
Derailleur Cables: Jagwire
Cassette: M-737 11-28
Chain: Sachs PC-91
Cranks: FC-M739 175
Crank Bolts: Std Shimano
Chainrings: 22/32/42
Chainring bolts: Std Shimano
Bottom Bracket: UN-55 (replaced UN-52, couldnt get a UN-72 at the time)
Pedals: Wellgo

Hub Skewers: Kore Titanium
Rims: Mavic XM517 Sup
Hubs: Fr: Hope Suspension, R: XT M737
Nipples: brass
Spokes: Stainless double butted
Tyres: Michelin Wild Grip'r 2.1
Tubes: Conti Shraeder valve

Saddle: Flite Titanium 1990
Seatpost: Thompson Elite (2012, replaced Dean, which had bent)
Seatpost Binder: Original GT

Weight: ???

The bike always felt a little big but switching to a shorter stem and a riser has improved that. The forks have been serviced, and i may pop it over to Dalby forest to the Pace service centre and ask about a travel upgrade to 90mm.

Im going to use her as my getting around bike, but want to keep her in good shape.

I'll post more pics when i can. I broke my wrist on my modern mtb the other day, so i cant do much right now.

I know im not purist by putting some modern bits on it, but i think they go really well. I am looking out for a set of period XT rapid fires, though. just biding my time till a really good pair come along.

The first pic is after it had been in to get its new headset fitted.

Thanks guys.

The Zaskar was the bike I always wanted, ever since I first saw one in Wheelbase in the early 90's.

Just the frame, ball burnished, in a cabinet on the wall.

Amazing bike. It'll always be my favourite.

I'm thinking of selling on the parts I have removed (bar, bar ends, stem, shifters),

I'll post pics of them soon

Very nice, but I'm very biased on these :)

Looks in great condition indeed.

Thanks Nem.

It's in pretty good shape apart from a scratch on the top tube where the brake lever hit at one time, an a small scratch on the down tube very near the top. Not sure how that happened

Just been reading about yours. Lovely bike, indeed. I prefer the look of the smaller frames

Finally managed to get out for a proper ride on the Zaskar. something I've not been able to do for a while, due to, well, road biking mainly

so this morning decided to take my camera with me and get a few pics.

I now have a modern Kore Race bar and stem combo. very nice. Im using modern Sram attack shifters, until I can get a decent set of XT pods. The Sram are actually very good. shift really well.

Still need to replace the decals, so thats a job for winter. would like to strip it down and give the frame a good polish. not sure of the best way to do this with it being anodised
