Cheap and cheerful GT talera

The new commuter, not done anything to it yet bar fit my slicks. Seems to run pretty well though.
Some moderate pimping to follow, for now can anyone advise the year? Not the most desirable bike but the colour way won me over, it'll match my retro GT jerseys nicely

I really like that - good condition, and an everyday honest model. It's a pretty bike.

Mmm...I think it's 1997, the decal font looks the same as my Psyclone - I could be wrong though

I've also never seen a Talera with the Team Scream paint option. Makes a great commuter in my opinion - solid frame, all the mountings you need..what's not to like?

Cheers guys, yeah it will do just fine as a daily. I don't think there are many around in this colour scheme, i thought it might be a tad older than 97 as i guessed it may have had v's at this point as shown here. http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/5078/taleraod3.png i think they stopped making the talera in 97.

That looks great for a modest outlay. You couldn't get a new bike that looked that cool for the money.

That was the plan, I wanted something useable rather than my last project which ended up to nice to actually ride!

I think I'll just have to own two retro bikes from here on. A nice psyclone in matching paint would be rather fitting don't you think? But rare as hens teeth I guess...

Wondering how you found working with the old stem - I have got my hands on a 1992 Pantera. With the original stem probably rusted in place. Not sure if it's relevant but would you have any advice on getting it off. (So I can work on the headset either new bearings or replacement.)

Again not sure if this is an area of your expertise but am guessing it might be someones:

1) Guessing my bike would have had a Deore LX rear derailleur. Anyway know this for sure?
2) The front brakes are V Brakes which means they can't be original parts as I think these kicked off in about 1996. The rear break is an EXAGE mountain caliper brake.
3) I bought this bike along with two others and a load of bent wheels and old parts for £20 locally. I suspect the Araya silver aluminium rims with quick release are the most likely original wheelset.

It seems that the only stuff I can find online about the bike indicates Suntour components but then some people mention Euro spec was Shimano and I think a lot of the LX parts on the bike were original. Sorry to bump your thread!

No worries, nice find though! I can only suggest some good penetrating fluid from the top and bottom of the headtube, then some brute force... If you get no luck with that you could try submerging it in boiling water for a bit as well then give it a go as soon as you pull it out.
