So there I was minding my own business and browsing the for sale section and BANG there she was a Rocky Mountain Blizzard frame offered by the good Doctorbond. Posted: Sun May 29, 2011 8:01 pm Post subject: 1992 Rocky Mountain Blizzard

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, so four children, a job with travel and a house that needs restoring means I'm having to be realistic about my long "to do list" of builds.

And so here is a fairly scarce opportunity to purchase a lovely early 90's Rocky Mountain Blizzard frame and forks set. So if you have been inspired by the recent Canadian BOTM (check out Woody's lush build), then here is your chance to go Maple.

I've always loved the Blizzard model since I met a chap touring one round Thailand in the early 90s. It's a practical go anywhere model which is still light and responsive enough to be properly quick. Build it with Powerlites and Revolutions and it looks nigh on perfect.

This one is a 1991 or 1992 version in unrestored condition: needs new paint but is perfectly sound. Frame is made from the excellent Tange Prestige Concept tubing, which means it has variable diameter tubes that are wider near the head tube, and also a seat tube that is eliptical in section near the BB to add lateral strength.

Fork is a cute Spinner-built P2 style affair.

I'm not sure on year: it has cable stops for the front derailleur routing rather than a noodle, which suggests 92, but the serial number is 91. Maybe built in 91 for the 92 model year. Full serial # is T9108 474.

It was one of those moments when you are the first on the scene, I almost looked around the room first :D
I paid the good doctor and a few days later she arrived

Sadly the original pics are now long gone but she was finished all over in what could be described as an eggshell finish white with only the tubing spec sticker on the frame.

I sent the frame to those nice chaps at Derwent enamellers in Derby
and paid for a simple white powdercoat finish
In the meantime I was busy making some purchases ready for the build to start ODI grips from Germany ( thanks for the tipoff Omar ) Syncros bars from Portugal ...that kind of thing and I became a little obsessed

The frame then made its appearance three weeks after dropping it off and I set about masking the frame to spray the top tube black ....

around about now the wheels were being built up at Mercian cycles and I had a great result at the Nottingham bike jumble on the morning of the Mountain mayhem weekend picking up two pairs of NOS folding tyres Mythos XC and Onza RACING ?
When the wheels were done in the week I could not resist a cheeky shot on the phone...excuse the quality...

The Syncros stem off ebay turned out to be for a 1 1/4" steerer so it held things up a bit while I sourced another...there were some kind offers on here but none materialised...new stem in hand I started the build last Friday...

That's better I read the first post before an just felt like there should be more :)

(as a side Rockies of this era are designed to have rear mech cables go down the none-drive side and switch under the wish bone and front down the drive side. This is to give a better curve at the front from the shifter and probably stops things catching in the rear mech loop from top tube to stay.)
Nothing to worry about really )
