here's a picture of my second MTB - recently recovered from a neighbour's garage and about to get a thorough spring-clean, possibly with the idea of rehoming it.
I bought it in late '88 from Hillman bikes in north Melbourne (http://home.vicnet.net.au/%7Ehillman/index.html
) as a courier hack. I was working for Dart Couriers and the Suntour components on my original hack, also from Hillman's, weren't coping with the rigours - so I bought a much better specced Shimano Mountain LX replacement.
The bike is still pretty much original, apart from the handlebar and grips - the originals were cut very narrow for courier work, so they got replaced when the bike came back to the UK.
Note the bottom bracket rear brake - a brilliant idea, unless you enter any clay, in which case the rear wheel stops going round
And the front relector bracket to stop the straddle wire snagging the front wheel.
