96 Kona Lava Dome

TIF

Dirt Disciple
As I am still looking for a yearly Kona Hei Hei, I some times find some other interesting bikes. To day I came over a Kona Lava Dome, since I got the bike real cheap (£50) I thought that I might could use the wheels, grab the P2 fork and the race light parts. Then get rid off the rest of the bike as the owner said it was an 18,5" So I thought it must be an 19".

But the bike where a 17" and its not ridden!! It has been standing in a garage for years! The women who owned it had only ridden for a couple off seasons, and the bike has no wear marks from cabling, or chain! Just has few scratches from all the years in the garage!

It still has the original tires!!, only "damage" she has done, is to get the bike shop to install a horrible stem... as she didn't feel conferrable on the bike.

So I guess I have bought myself a new project? it is a petty to slaughter this bike. As specially since my favorite is the 17"...

But with two Explosifs, one G.F. Roscoe, one KHS Montana Pro and my two commuters Marin Nail Tail and Kona Dew deluxe. I have kind of filled up my garage ....

more and less finished with my Lave Dome, gonna start using it as soon as the snow are gone on the gravel roads in the Oslo woods.

Basically have done this to the bike:

XT wheels (had does laying around)
XT rear derailleur
DX front derailleur
XT gear shifters
XTR 8 speed cassette 12-32
Kona Race Light saddle (bought for a member here)
Velocity steam
Put on some Nobby Nic tires.

Looking forward to start using it :)

Cheap yes but, actually it is hard to obtain old classics here in Norway. People dont bother to sell them, they just trash them.

Actually at the last birkebeiner cross country race over 250 bikes where left back! Picture is form the local paper.

Any way Birken is a great race if you are into gravel raceing.
