Hi all, new member with questions

Retro Newbie
Hi everyone, found this site while doing Google search for chainring clearance on my build.
A short introduction, 40ish rider with a Giant XTC 27.5 and Opus Adanate disc road bike, weekend worries type. Currently building a 1998 cannondale F400 which I bought used for cad$150, gonna build it as a hybrid style so can tow my 5yrs old on her ride along semi bike. And one know if a 40t single crankset can clear the seat stay.
Plan is 40t with 11~36 10s. Thanks in advance. Already spend 3 hours watching all your wonderful build here...

Re:

welcome aboard - but you should be aware that you have posted a Q about a '98 bike in a post-'97 forum ... so you might not be affronted with a multitude of responses.

good luck w/your build ...

Opps, sorry for the error. Sored eye for jumping on different forum here. It's a cad2 so should be the same

Hey welcome to Retro Bike :D

I can’t answer your question as I’ve never done 1 x 10 etc but will be following this discussion/thread closely

narrow wide chainring (to keep the chain in place) and an external BB/ crankset should see you right - lots of adjustment to keep the chainline reasonable.

Re:

I ride a modern 1X10 setup on my enduro and fatbike. I would say unless you have legs like tree trunks then 40T is way to large, especially if you are looking at towing a trailer. I would say 32 or 34 chainring and if you can increase the range to at least 11-40 that would make a big difference. When my children were younger I used to tow a tag along with one of my retro's and was always in the middle ring and occasionally in the granny ring (but it was an 11-30 cassette)

Re:

Thanks for the warm welcome. Planning to use those aliexpress single ring with external bb. For concern of gear ratio, I did use those online roll out calculator which fastest gear was at 7.5m while slowest gear was at 2.29(with 1.95 street tire), both end are within the range of my current bikes.

Re:

That F400 looks nice , 40T with those tyres should be fine, looking forward to seeing how this turns out :)

Re:

Switching my other bike from trainer wheel back to road ready. And toying to fit 700*25 to my cannondale project. Also test fit if 10 speeds cassette can be fitted to 8 speed hub that came with the bike.
