You'll notice there's a difference between my frame and also the spare one that's cracked. Cable lugs are also under the top tube on the cracked frame too so it must be an earlier frame, it also looks like someone has scratched up the aluminium in the past to provide a key before painting over it in gold.
Great investigative pics and the older one looks like a copy of a traditional steel BB shell set up... but being Ally has obviously worn more with cables.
I wonder if that nasty crack could have been caused by vaulting/landing on a log?
Or I remember that I bought a clamp/strap-on chainset bash-bar thingy (luckily for my previous Overbury’s Crossfell steel bike) that was designed to protect the expensive BioPace chainset teeth, but would actually have transferred shock to the underside of the down tube (scary add-on accessory on reflection).

I’d still say glued not screwed and glued for carbon tube though !

I stuck my finger into the tubes and couldn't feel anything that resembled threads so I'm inclined to agree that they are just glued. I'm going to clean out all the dirt from in there and see if anything is visible.
I also spoke to a couple of specialists who said the crack is most likely from an impact as there shouldn't be any reason why the carbon itself would fail even after all these years.
The threads would be on the outside, with internal matching threads in the Ally lugs, so your unlikely to feel them.
The Alan’s were threaded LH & RH so that they’d pull in both lugs (with matching threads) along with adhesive to prevent unwinding.
I’d guess ours just have shoulders on the tubes and with adhesive added on the ends are just pushed in, clamped in a jig for trueness while they set solid.
