I spent years riding Kona, and always wondered about the bikes Joe Murray had influence over prior to his time with "the Bicycle group-TBG-Kona" mountain bikes.

And when you look, theirs always a lot more to a story than you first think.

Re:

This one came up as a frame and fork in the for sale section a fair while ago, a pretty well kept package with a little patina.

I guess we all have our reasons for the choices we make, and why we turn to certain bikes and models and this one was no different.

Accredited to be the first main stream brand to display the new Tange Prestige tubeset on the shopfloors in the uk, this wasnt the reason for me liking it so much,

the carrot that got me with this was "Joe Murray".

Re:

The Marin Pine Mountain Was one of his early Marins from 1988 , and whilst an Off the peg model, it used the Tange Prestige frame with a lugged construction and a Shimano Deore Group.

Re:

It wasn't top of the range, it wasn't big bucks when compared to others, but it had its place for me, and for £100, it was worth it.

Re:

Trying to find good usable kit,... this came from a rescue bike, a Rocky Mountain Avalanche, in dyer need of some love and a full repaint to save the frame and fork from the rust of time, most of the components would go again with some fettling, and could be used for the Marin Pine Mountain, and when the refinish was complete on the Rocky an upgrade of spec could be made.
All of this takes time, but better hung on a bike than stored in a box or worse still thrown on the scrap heap.

Re:

Theres no doubt Marin Mountain bikes came to be a forced to be recognised on shop floors here in the UK, good business strategy by its UK importer A.T.B sales, of this there is little doubt, but the magazines were always a great help.

Heres an early extract from an article run in MBUK issue one Volume 2.

Fascinating read. As a newbie and recent Marin convert it's interesting to find out about the history and personalities involved in the early days.

Nice bike by the way.

Cheers, i enjoyed putting it all together, the frame package, was in really great condition, just the odd minor show of wear, easily polished and touched in. There is a lovely hue of colour to the silver, almost a purple to the metallic.

It was such a refreshing change to assemble too, no searching for the right seat post and saddle, Bar and stem it was all saved and in good order.

The recused Rocky Mountain, warranted saving as its in my daughters size, and shes in need of a bike this summer. It will need total refurb on the paint. So the rest of the parts were just sat there, begging to be used.

Some polishing and assembling, and shes ready to ride at last.

Finding time is therapeutic, you can find a lot of solace in immersing yourself sometimes. And the current topic in this months BOTM is a great excuse to pull your finger out too.

Gathering together some pics and mag articles to post i think helps my sanity as much as anything else.

You certainly appreciate things a little more for what they are with a little back story, especially so long after.
