Wheels!

I'm awaiting another pair to come in but here is first option for a wheelset.

A lovely condition Suntour XC Pro Greasegaurd hubs on Specialized TXL21 rims, 32 hole. I believe these are the same wheels as on Ned Overends 92 M2 S-Works so a fairly decent pair of wheels.

Front weighs in at 852g and the rear 1086g (the attached cassette weighs 231g according to the Suntour catalogue). I took out the skewers before weighing.

I think thats a pretty light pair of wheels, but has anyone here got a similar year pair of wheels they can compare with these weights? What counts as light, super light, heavy etc.

So just as a comparison since I'm fresh off the scales - , the stock Trek/Matrix wheels from my 1996 9700 oclv are 817 grams (F) and 1009 grams (R)
Trek Front Hub, Shimano LX rear, Matrix Swami Rims and Marwi double butted spokes. They are a few years newer than your build, but probably a fairly good example of a mid grade wheel from the mid 90s

Good to know, theyre equivalent weight to my Suntour ones. How much does your 9700 OCLV weigh overall?

Just under 23 lbs/10.4 kg - still with heavy stock LX/STX drivetrain, those "not light" wheels and a seatpost/saddle that has maybe 150-200 grams to shed.

Yippee the frame and forks have arrived. Just unpacked them and theyre in better condition than i though, the red is really deep and shiny. Fantastic.
Just plonked the bits on the scales so i can see where we are at.

Frame comes in at 3.858 pounds or 3lb 13.72 ounces and the forks at 1.898 pounds or 1lb 14.37 ounces so thats not too shabby for a 25 year old frame.
The fun starts from here.

Re:

Looking forward to seeing it progress.

A lot of my builds have been built 'light' maybe not 100% period though!

But, you may find something of interest in some of my build threads, thinking maybe one of the Axis team titanium's, got it down to 19.88lb with Mag 21 SL Ti...

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=326778&start=30

btw, I built the wheelset pretty much as MTS did: White Ind hubs, 230's but with DT rev spokes = 1460g iirc

Have fun!

Hunting around at bits whilst i await some major bits, including the frame to arrive; I'm looking for easy weight saving initially for not too much £££

Here's a good one. Continental Supersonic inner tubes, only £9 each and 100g apiece. Standard inner tubes are around 160-190g apiece, so theres an easy 120g to 180g saving overall just by buying good tubes. Thats nearly 0.4lb's saved. I'll be ordering some as soon as wheels and tyres arrive.

Why not try tubeless? I have used tires which were not rated tubeless and they work. It can be a chore to seat the bead though.

The brakes have arrived. A lovely set of Avid Tri Aligns. Super light and brilliantly designed. Lovely.

*did anyone else notice or am I the only weirdo?
