1991/1992 Kona Lava Dome Joe Murray 17inch

Re:

That looks awesome!
Love the dramatic pics!

I’m hoping to drop mine off to get powdercoated tomorrow so should have pics of it within the week.

Thanks for the inspiration :D

Re:

Ok....

So after deliberating over the paint and deciding it was past it’s best and not wanting to apply new repro decals onto a frame that wouldn’t do it justice I decided to have it powdercoated by local master craftsman, Drew.

I told him I wanted a nice steel looking frame with a dark anthracite coloured fork and stem.

I left him to it and he came up with what he calls ‘ferric’ for the frame and ‘dark grey metallic’ for forks and stem.

Ain’t collected it yet but he sent me this sneak peek pic today!

Collecting frame tomorrow. I think that the new decals from Gil M will look awesome on it!

Also have acquired lots of new goodies to bolt on in the meantime so watch this space!

Re:

Thanks Bawgixer...

I collected the frame and although the forks and stem are concourse, the frame had dried with a few minor imperfections so is getting stripped and re done again.

I’m a sucker for detail so the small setback will be worth the outcome.

Hopefully have the frame sometime next week. I’ll post pics up when new decals and headset is fitted as a preview. :D

Re:

Repro Decals by Gil M will be goin on. I have them and they look ace!
I’ve also sourced period XT chainset and cantis as upgrade from original along with LX rear mech and shifters... so a LX/XT group mix.
I’ve basically got a large box now of new and good condition used items I’ve sourced sat in a box next to the frame awaiting assembly. I’m awaiting a new headset arriving to make a start...

I’d like to go full XT but think I’ll get it built first so I can admire it before I shell out for the rest of the groupset.

Wheels will be original I think but I’ll service and polish them and I have some skinwall Schwalbe Table tops I’ve just bought to shod them with which look good against the frame.

I’ve decided to fit a brand new FSA headset as I always feel that once you have a frame PC or painted, then it’s right to do this IMO..

I do have an almost full later 90’s XT groupset which I could fit including V brakes but feel like I should keep it as period as possible... but might change my mind later... :?:

Anyway, hoping to have the skeleton of the bike assembled within the next few weeks so I’ll share more pictures as I go.

I’m well pleased with the contrast of silver frame and dark anthracite fork
;)

Re:

Bike is on its way now...

Finished the job I hate of dressing a PC frame..
Basically this is a time consuming process of cleaning all the threads and ensuring that all the masked areas are cleaned and faced.

The 1 1/8 threaded BB headset I purchased has a too high stack height as these original impact headsets were pretty low stack. After hitting this conundrum I’ve managed to fit the lower BB cup and bearings and salvage the upper impact one and fitted new bearings to keep the standard look of this bike.

Sneaky couple of pics before decals go on either later or tomorrow ...
