Just picked this up of a lovely fella who lives in Wallsend about 35 min drive away.

It’s been in his garage for 15years and the dust proves it.

In pretty decent original fettle. Few scrapes but no dents.

Probably go for a powdercoat in original colours, decals from Gil M, and early indications from a quick 5 minute look over are that rear mech may need replacing along with BB but I’ll look into it further when I have the time. Will grease all bearings and fit a new full cable set.
Tyres look pretty good tho!

I’ll replace things like chain, brake blocks, tubes etc but should be an enjoyable project. First time I’ve owned one of these and really like the look and colour. Think it’s gonna be the wife’s when completed ...

Re:

Funny I was deliberating that!
Maybe a t cut and touch up (if I can find a close match) plus new decals :?:

Re:

This pic up close explains why I was/am thinking of powdercoat?

If anyone however knows a good match in those airfix/humbrol paints please let me know as I might have a go at touch up rather than full repaint. There’s also a bit needs touching in where rear tyre has caught the stays over the years but not bad apart from that.

Cheers
Andy

Ps! Wowsers look at the 15 years of garage dust near the BB!

Re:

Love these bikes, the paint doesn't look too bad, I'd see what you can do with T-cut and touch up paints first, then decide if its worth the time , expense & effort to strip it/powdercoat/re-decal/ build it. No doubt it would look fresh, but its only original once ;)

Re: 1992 Kona Lava Dome Joe Murray 17inch

Started strip down and forks have 1991 spinner embossed on the steerer and on dropouts? Forgive my ignorance but makes these P2’s? Correct?

Re: 1992 Kona Lava Dome Joe Murray 17inch

Will be suprised how much difference a good clean and polish will make, like others have said, the paint doesnt look bad at all.

Re:

Thanks guys...
Ordered the new decals from Gil M.
Sadly the paint does look better in pics than in the flesh. I don’t wanna put new decals on it when paint don’t reflect that so it will be a strip and powdercoat at a trusted local guy who has done lots of other stuff for me (frames, car wheels, motorbike wheels etc).

I have been toying with a colour change of the frame only to orange or green or baby blue (favourite option) but in the end have decided to stay original.
He’s gonna pc the forks gloss black then match the frame colour with wet paint with a pc clear coat is how he explained it?

I’ll be keeping as much original parts as possible but have upgraded to a period LX rear mech and brakes to XT v brakes.

I’m hoping to clean the wheels up and service them and have some brand new Schwalbe folding table top skin wall tyres to fit.

;)

You could get the colour scanned and have a perfect match touch up paint made up for you.

Good project u have there.

I got an explosif with similar state of paint scratched chipped and well faded.
Ended up new paint on frame fork and stem, decals from Gil and put bk together.
Few parts will be changed over once I’ve finished machine polishing the other bits
