Steve Peats 1993 kona hei hei build

A while ago (sept 2016) I decided to build a Kona Hei Hei, thought about what to do for ages and settled on trying to recreate Steve Peats 1993 Kona Hei Hei. Firstly because it was a pretty cool bike and secondly as I wanted something that would be a challenge to source the parts for. Started with a post on http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... 2#p2858902 asking for help to narrow dow the exact specs. There was a bit of going back and forward but I also managed to get a look at Steve Behr original images from the MBUK shoot, which helped immensely.

The Vital MTB video 'What's in Peaty's Attic?' was also pretty handy

Re:

Absolutely loving the geometry and the look of this tribute now it’s complete. Your perseverance to manage this project and pull it off is really quite remarkable.

Very much looking forward to the ride report! Curious to learn how the disc brake and fork contribute to the overall handling.

Re:

The front hub is a Hope suspension splined for disk not a Ti Glide as the Glide refers to hypergide for the rear....

Looks nice but the crown offset looks huge..

Thanks, it actually rides pretty well.

Well its done and has been ridden around the block.

Super thanks to those that helped with the spec, finding parts and general advice. Special thanks to Steve from Whites Bikes for the build, general knowledge of all things Retro MTB. Also huge shout out to Steve Behr who took the original images from MBUK, he had a few extras that he gave me access too which enabled me to fill in a few missing pieces.

The idea was to create a Kona Hei Hei that was as close as possible to Steve's original 1993 spec but in my size and as a customer rather than a 'pro'. I would say it's a 98% match with only a few minor parts/bolts not 100% correct.

Biggest pain was the rims, obscure part to start with and not common Down Under, ended up finding some but have to have a black one turned silver then re applied the original stickers. The Hope brake was originally black and I had it polished and painted.

Made most of the stickers myself (main 'Kona' ones and 'Custom Kona' are from Gill, rest are original)

Now for the next project....
