1992/3 Kona Explosif

Old School Hero
This is the cleanest retro Kona Explosif I have ever seen and thought to share the pictures with you guys.

It was apparently lightly ridden for 50km by someone in the early 90s, and then kept in the cellar since. The owner’s son took it to a shop in Germany just a month back to “upgrade” to a new full susser and I bought it.

I believe it is practically stock except for the grips. It has not been repainted or refurbished. Even the pedals, Sakae Low-fat are there.

It looks so good I am afraid of even bringing it out for a good ride! Will have to seriously consider the conditions before I do it.

A small part of me actually wishes the condition is not so good! :)

Enjoy!

Sorry chaps

I was too excited to “show off” the bike.

Will take proper pics tomorrow. I was using the phone camera

Re:

Yup, 91 was the first year of the colourful oval decals (without splatter paint) but the last year of a welded-on seat QR.

The Kilauea inherited the Prestige Concept tubeset a couple of years later, as Explosifs moved onto even more exotic steel.

Re:

It’s in terrific condition and liking that it’s still featuring the JM horseshoe.
This is the same as my 91’ purple Explosif, with prestige tubing and XT groupset, but as al-onestare mentions, this one has the K-Bikes sticker the german variants came with.
When the grips were upgraded (or maybe even earlier in its short life) it seems the original owner opted to switch out the original thumbshifters, that we’re stock, in favour of the then ‘new’ rapidfire shifters that many other manufacturers were keen on using at the time.
