Complete rebuild of 1990's MTB to 2016 XT spec 1x10

Re:

£641.88 isn't outlandish – you could have easily spent two to four times that amount buying any new bike. I've lost count of how much I've spent on my trusty old bike over the years but the pleasure and usefulness it provides is priceless.

A bike weighing just over 21lbs isn't bad at all. Mine was advertised at around 25lbs (or 7lbs for frame and forks) back in the day. The frame was stripped and repowdercoated a few years back and seemed a lot lighter on collection.

After your build efforts, you have a bike that has personal meaning and is unique to you and that's worth more than the dreary Specialized Sirrus hybrid the bike dealers were trying to flog you.

well just seen this thread. not sure what to say. i was kind on onboard with the sentimental angle, thats cool, and i get its your project and your money etc. then all the hassle with the rear mech so it became a mission to make it work, which i can understand. but then to strip and respray the frame, totally lost me.

im gonna make a suggestion on the brakes, go for drums. not really any better than the calipers but they will look kind of cool. you can get bolt on mounts for for the torque arms

you know it makes sense... or about as much sense as the rest of the build anyway

Hi Guys

A quick update on the whole bike project. I had promised to provide a final weight and price for completing this project and this is shown below. The only two parts I forgot to weigh before fitting were the two brake assembles but everything else is included in the below.

I would be interested in how this weight compares to other peoples bikes as I have no idea what is classed as a light weight mtb.

Cost wise I am really happy with the end result as I had set my spend limit at the price of the Specialised Sirrus Disc a shop was very keen to sell me a £525. I did end up spending more but some of was down to purchasing a few park tools along the way to help gain the highest quality build.

Final bike weight = 9655 grammes
Total spend = £641.88

My ultra high end titanium MTB weighs in that kind of ballpark....

As a result of this I thought I better double check my adding up. The figure was correct but as stated this doesn't include the two single pivot brake units as I forgot to measure them before fitting them. I have also noticed that I have forgotten to weigh the actual tyres themselves.

To be totally accurate I plan to weigh the complete bike as I have just been adding all the separate item weights together. The bike feels very light compared to the original and having compared the weight difference in tangible parts I have saved 2926 grammes on the modern parts over the original.

Most of this has come from the wheels. Each rim weighed around 1000 grammes lighter than the original 25 year old steel wheels.

I have ordered a pair of these brackets as someone was selling these for £1.97 each. At that price even if I don't use them in the conversion I can template them for the required geometry. Delivery is four weeks so I will carry on riding in between.

Hoping to do the climb on bikes free ride next saturday.
