My Son’s first retro – A homage to the man - DONE (Page 6)

Re: My Son’s first retro – A homage to the man

No thanks my friend..I have some forks lined up already

Re:

Delivery from Pace today means I can start to put the fork together. Not quite an FSX but ticks the right boxes in the looks and weight department.

Went for the MXCD monobox which I think were 95. Dead simple to service too. Swapped the brace for the rarer canti hanger rather than rocker version. I'll be running brakes facing forward!. Thanks to Tim at Fork English for finding that for me

Realised I don't yet have a headset although the rest of the build box is almost there. I think the Dirt bike had a diacompe aheadset in silver. A month searching and still no joy so may go for a more robust alternative.

Re:

Been having a think about wheels tonight too. Not sure the budget stretches to a set of DT Hugi hubs and although I do have a nos set of Mavic blue label 217s..even a fathers love has its limits.

Given the wheels will probably take the brunt of many a kerb and failed landing they need to be fairly indestructible ..so I've gone for this combo

XT M737/M738 hubs. I believe the 738 front has the alloy axel denoted by the gold sticker. Anyway I think these are largely regarded as the best hubs shimano made at that price point. Certainly the ones I got hold of are still as smooth as silk.

Rims ..going for slightly later 32h Mavic x517 SUP annodized. Good balance of strength and lightness IMO..plus they are what I had lying around and the logo colour matches the frame

Will crack on and build these up at the weekend. Might go radial front..or maybe 2 cross, 3 cross rear.

Re:

Bit of a hectic week this week so not as much done as I would have liked. Some inevitable set backs to deal with too. Not having long enough nipples  has scuppered the rear wheel build until more arrive next week. Also struggling to choose an appropriate headset

Anyway, new elastomers in the forks and front wheel is built. Wheel has been adorned with some lovely Specialized Ti skewers courtesy of Raidan73
Going for new issue smoke and dart combo for the tyres.

I think I'll turn my attention to the cockpit this week until the missing parts arrive. Azonic shorty and O'Neil bars look just right.

Had a bit of a play mocking it up in the sun this morning :D
