there was one on here that was a 16 that had no splatter - wonder if this it it with updated splatter :?

Yeah i remember that one it was on a while back, could well be that then with some splatter on it.

Re:

It's finally arrived in the post today the red 1990 Kona Lavadome. I've been hunting for one for ages now so when this popped up for sale i had to get it,in great survivor condition and perfect for what i've wanted to do for donkey's.
I never understood why they only done the yellow one in splatter and not the red or the white one,so i'm going to make my own :D

I'm sure most people are like me and normally have a certain part to start a build off, whether that be wheels a chainset or for me on this build a Mountain LX rear mech which is a bit shorter than they normally are.

So first up get that bottom bracket out and the headset, give it good clean and decide what colour or colours to splat on it.

Turquoise and pale pink splatter ;-) .

I'm definitely going with a bright blue first then i'm going to see if it should have another colour added, maybe white :)
Should be fun :D

Re:

Bottom bracket and the headset are out got to be one of the easiest cup and cone bb's i've tackled yet,no brute force required :)

The frame and forks have been washed, cream cleaned and one coat of polish and the red has come up a treat, very red when you see it close up.
There's a little bit of wear and tear to the paint and stickers but nothing a little touch up won't sort out plus with it getting splatted it'll cover some of those areas anyway.

Colours to splat it with, yellow mmm not sure at the minute with that one i've put a couple of drops of blue and white on the frame to have a look.
Definitely going with that blue i can picture the whole bike covered in it being very eye catching and it'll certainly stand out :D and i think the white might work aswell with not to much of it put on.

Re:

Progress update on the Lavadome.

Just a few more things to do and it'll be finished,i decided not to splat the bike because i'm going to be moving it on once it's built up and after cleaning it up it's in such good survivor condition it would be a shame to ruin it. I tried a little bit of splatting but just wasn't happy with the outcome so cleaned the paint off again,if i can get hold of a 91 or 92 Kona sometime which is a bit beat up i'll splat that instead.

I found those mythos tyres in the loft and for me they set the bike off perfectly and the velocity stem was a no brainer for me because i always like the look of a flat stem it gives the bike a racing look, plays havoc with your back but looks are more important  . So the only things left to do is give the seatube a better clean so the post moves more freely that's why it's where it is now on the photos, there's some new pedals on the way,new cables are sorted and i'm going to polish the crankarms some more.

Next update will be it finished and ready for sale.

Re:

Merry Christmas everyone :xmas-big-grin:

The Lavadome is finished and i think it's a great way to finish off this whole overhauling build thread. This bike i think sums up the whole theme of the thread perfectly and is probably out of all the Konas i've done has gave me the greatest satisfaction when it was completed, yes i'm chuffed with it :D
I went with mostly Mountain LX parts because it's sort of the forgotten groupset with it only being available for one year. And with the frameset being in such great condition and all the nice shiny parts on the bike i got the idea to put all the new reflectors and spoke guard on the bike,i like the look :)
