Mongoose Supergoose Replica

Before we get to the bike itself let me start with a little background on me and my love of BMX's. Before I joined the RAF I worked at a local bike shop (Cutmoore's Cycles, Rushden, N'thants) now sadly long closed down. It was a great way to learn how to build bikes, service them and also to sell them to the customer. The shop itself was well stocked with many branded names, Dawes, Elswick, Raleigh, but unfortunately lacked in the popular BMX brands from BITD. Luckily for me neighbouring local town (Wellingborough) had such a specialist shop 'Mike Jeff's BMX' from HARO, Mongoose, DP, Falcon, SE Racing & Redline it had loads of top branded bikes. Now over the years I owned several of these bikes and lusted over a lot more. Like all hobbies and interests as i grew my bikes were sold on to provide much needed money for Motorcycles and Drink and Girls ;) The tragic thing is I sold them for peanuts, practically giving them away. I did however always say I would have another one, yes even at the ripe old age of 43. Now sadly decent retro BMX's are fetching ££££ and as such wont be arriving in the man cave very soon, but a replica however well that's a different story.

Now to make a replica you must have the under pinnings, and with that I mean Frame & Forks. Newer BMX frames don't have the same geometry as the older classic's so it would have to be based on an 80's machine. With massive thanks to Bendycat for parting with this fine beast, behold my 1984 Viceroy BMX Frame & Forks.

Now the astute amongst you will by now already have worked out what BMX this Viceroy is going to be changed into? If not take a look at the Gusset, the Rear Stays, still unsure? Ok I will put you out of your misery, my aim is to create a replica Mongoose

Now it will not be an identical replica, there are slight differences, however with replica prism decals, a smattering of old school Dia-Compe MX 1000 Brakes in Anodised Red, Some Red Skyway Tuff 2's I think it will stand proud as a tribute to the mighty Supergoose of the 80's. Hopefully I will be able to create something like the fine examples in the piccy's.

It will be slow burner (Not Raleigh Burner lol :D), but I've already ordered Headset, BB, One-Piece Crank and Chainring & Spider. The Wheels and Tyres will be the next purchase followed by the Brakeset, final parts will be Kashimax Aero Saddle and Mongoose Grips.

Finally I hope it doesn't upset the purists, It's a replica, homage to a bike that one day I may actually own, It's going to be a nostalgic trip for myself, and hopefully a few others along the way.

Enjoy :D

Re: Old School BMX Replica (**NOT FOR THE PURISTS**)

Cool. I look forward to seeing your progress, but then, I'm not a purist!

Prices of these things are crazy though. I shudder to think what I sold my Torker for BITD every time I see what they go for now.

Re: Old School BMX Replica (**NOT FOR THE PURISTS**)

Excellent job. That looks lovely :D

There are plenty of Sugino chain rings popping up on EBay and I believe there was a copy of the Kashimax Aero produced, which should save you lots of money.

I always wanted a red/chrome Supergoose but I am too tall to ride one now.

Good luck with the rest of the build ;)

Cheers, I'm watching a few right now on eBay, and keeping my eye out for a saddle :) hoping to get decals applied tomorrow and Tuff II Brake blocks have arrived so I can progress a little more with it.

Re: Old School BMX Replica (**NOT FOR THE PURISTS**)

Ok as promised some better pictures, and a few of you will notice that the decals are now applied. It's funny how the look of a bike can be transformed with some uber sparkly prismatic decals. Dia-Compe cable clamps now replace the ty-wraps and secure the rear brake cable to the top tube. Tuff II brake blocks also now fitted. Still hunting down the remaining parts but I feel optimistic that it will completed pretty soon, when I say pretty soon I actually mean January 2014. Anyway enjoy and If I don't catch up again hope your all having a great Xmas and New Year

Jussa :D

Re: Old School BMX Replica (**NOT FOR THE PURISTS**)

Ok its done, complete, even managed to snaffle some pads from ebay which really was the icing on the cake.

But the big question? right back to the start of this project I had a mission, a mission to build a BMX that would replicate one of the most iconic BMX's in history. Should I have done this? Was I walking on hallowed ground, committing a crime in the most heinous way? maybe you guys can answer the question.

Anyway am I happy with it? Yes, over the moon, it's been a nostalgic journey and triggered so many memories of my BMX'ing days back in the 80's, It's a joy to ride, and in my opinion looks the Dogs Danglies. Would I do it again? Hell Yeah, infact I am, so watch this space.

But until then enjoy my tribute to the Mongoose Supergoose.

Re: Old School BMX Replica (**NOT FOR THE PURISTS**)

Looks great.

As for whether you have done something 'wrong'. Only if you try to sell it as a genuine article IMHO.
You know it is a replica. As long as you inform any buyer of that fact then no harm, no foul.

There will be no sale, this is a keeper on the basis that one day the Viceroy frame and forks will be replaced with the real thing :D the question was more akin to the Kit Car, Replica route I have taken, and whether there are some things you just don't replicate, it's more a homage, like all great paintings and artwork they all get copied at one time or another :D
