De La Marin

At Midnight, Sunday June 21 the Summer solstice De La starts here in Marin County. This is an underground race organized by two unnamed friends of mine twice yearly-at the start of Summer and the start of Winter. It's approximately 100 miles in the dirt nonstop and goes on lots of trails you're not supposed to be on, with over 15,000 feet of climbing! The route changes each time, and you have to be invited to participate. The course is usually so grueling that only 10-20 per cent of the 100 or so entrants finish, and the only prizes are bragging rights in the local MTB community. Definitely an event for the ultra distance riders, as the first finishers usually take 14-18 hours, depending on that day's course. Pat

Update on the Summer De La. This year only about 50 people made the start and only 3 finished it, 23 hours later! The total amount of climbing was OVER 20,000 feet in the 100 or so mile course, and of the 3 people to actually finish, one was a woman pro MTB racer! NEW results in, another 3 people finished, but well over 24 hours to do it. Pat

Sounds amazing - the sort of course EdEdwards would love!

Did the event get any media coverage - are there any photos of the terrain?

No media coverage or pics. because this event is TOTALLY UNDERGROUND! Most of the course is on prohibited trails and on the day of the event, a friend of mine ran into a Sheriff in his 4 wheel drive truck up on the Mountain (Tam). The Sheriff mentioned the De La and that they were looking for them but hadn't caught anybody yet! As it turns out only 2 people were caught and given trespass tickets when they went to retrieve some previously stashed water bottles. However, they were only about a dozen feet from a paved road through the Water District and within the County Road boundaries at the time, so they will fight the tickets ($271.00) in Court and will probably win!
