when did Carl start riding for Retrobike?

A few names I recognise from BITD - for how much longer can Roger Hammond dominate CX?

I don't know Carl , does he post on here?

But I know it's cool to have been in the same race as Alex Paton (Junior champ, in a London league cx race last month) and Jamie Newall (road race last week) :-)

I don't know if Carl is on here or not - I used to race against (and regularly get beaten by) him as a Junior/Expert when I'm sure he rode for Proflex?

I once was lapped by Jody Crawforth at a race near Ipswich

Carl Sturgeon started riding for retrobike as of his second place finish in the Kenilworth Common boxing day cyclocross.

Those who haven't heard of Carl should leave through some old mags - his racing credentials are certainly impressive and include a silver medal at the mtb nationals at pro/elite level along with numerous other top finishes and wins.

More details to follow as the season unfolds....

Ive not tried it but try googling Carl Sturgeon, should be funny. Carl raced a Notts & Derby league cyclo-cross back in September, which i believe was his 1st outing this year (coming 2nd), then he came in 2nd at Kennilworth cyclo-cross on Boxing Day (an event he has won a number of times) and 18th at the Nat Champs, not bad for his 3rd race of the year (and no grid position)!! His highest placing in the past was 2nd. He has raced as a Pro for Raleigh and Orange amongst others.
Carl still rides a fair bit (under no circumstances ever go for a ride with him, he only has 1 super fast speed!) and races occaisionally. He is probably one of the most unintentionally retro of racers.
(As a brief aside, i went on a ride with him at Afan last year. On a hardtail with v brakes and 80mm travel forks he dropped 2 current top elite racers who were both on their "play bikes" - f&r 4" suspension, disks, etc on most of the descents.)
In the Junior World XC champs (way back in the day) he attacked on the last lap, heading for the win, but slid out and crashed on a descent, letting Filip Meirhaghe (of EPO fame) past. Carl finished 2nd.

Wow thanks for the info.

I like that bit with two future retro-bikers

43rd 3-Peaks Cyclo-cross
By Guy Andrews

Starts: Helwith Bridge near Settle, North Yorkshire
On: Sunday 26th September 2004

The toughest cyclo-cross race in the world - taking in the climbs of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent. Sadly the entry is now closed but it is still well worth a trip just to watch. So if you fancy a day out riding to stunning vantage points, in some of the best countryside in the UK, get up to North Yorkshire this weekend.

This race is unique. It's also slightly insane and incredibly tough. Organiser John Rawnsley has competed in every event since its inception in 1960 and his enthusiasm for this event is admirable. They've only missed one year (due to foot and mouth).
It suits fell runners and riders who like a fast and scary descent as only competitors riding cyclo-cross bikes will be allowed to take part. Mountain bikes (or any other type of two-wheeled transport) are not permitted and anyone who appears (in the opinion of the race officials) to contravene this rule will be disqualified and/or prevented from taking part in the race - so just skinny tyres on this terrain, it's madness.

Who will win? Well the start sheet is packed with favourites and past winners; Rob Jebb (winner last year) and Nick Craig (second last year) and Andy Peace, Chris Young, Ian Taylor, Richard Thackray, Geoff Beetham, Carl Sturgeon, Dave Collins, Paul Oldham, Ian Wilkinson and Keith Murray also ride so expect a great race as there's always a few first timers that do well too. In the womens race Louise Robinson will be hard to beat.
