I'm going to attempt an oldest to youngest post of 30 different GT's that I've picked up over the years and still have.

The Timberline and Backwoods were the original mountain bike models offered by GT back during the 1985 model year. The frame was tig pulse welded in Japan from Ishiwata 4130 chromoly. Spec's include Araya 7X rims laced to SR Sealed Mech Hubs, Sakae CX crankset, Suntour Mountech front/ rear derailleurs, SR Laprade posted fluted with Viscount Terra Nova saddle.
Jeff Archer at MOMBAT also has pictures posted of one in a smaller frame size with different brakes to prevent heel knock. You see a definite GT BMX presence in these early models. Epoch headsets, Double bolt stems, seat tube piercing the top tube. Frame design very similar to this was carried into the original Outpost and Talera models of the late 80's before they too were switched to triple triangle frames.

Stay tuned, tomorrow double u-brakes.

PS, If anyone's got a left shifter please PM me.
