Hi, could I ask what don't you like about it? I live in the peaks and I'm looking for a bit of a project steel summer bike. I average around 15mph and do quite a bit of climbing.... Would this be suitable for you think?

Hi

Its a bit small for me and I've bought something shinier to take its place making this thoroughly surplus

This would be fine for a project, you can still get replacement decals from ebay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Raleigh-Comp ... 1438.l2649

You can use it as is but I'd change the rear cassette to something more hill friendly!

Many thanks for the reply....I thought I might change the cassette! I'm 5'11" with 31" inch inside leg? Would I fit?

It would be on the larger side but then I ride 60+ frames without issue

Ooops! Without seeing the bike I've no idea what needs spending on it to make it rideable... Pedals, tyres, bearings, etc etc.... Thought it might be worth a cheeky offer..... Anyways good look with the sale I take it you want much much closer to 150?

No worries, its in pretty reasonable condition and other than a cassette for your area (I was going to include one but oooh, I dont know now, it may be a poo in an envelope) it wouldnt have needed anything.

You'd be better off looking on ebay for the cheapies.

Going today to look at a Carlton Pro-Am full bike with 531 frame and forks etc... it's on eBay at 160 but he says he'll take 130.... It's only 20 miles away so I've only lost a bit of fuel if its not what I want. Yours is a bit more of a punt being so far away plus it may be a little too large so might have had to sell it if it didn't fit. I know I was being very cheeky....I know you say it's good to go without spending on it and I'm sure you are an honest person.

I'm a terrible human being, I almost glared at a cat earlier.

That carlton is a bit of a naff restoration. No braze ons , steel seat post etc etc.

Post subject:  Re:

I actually did lol at that cat comment....

Braze-ons?

I'm being serious when I ask this so please don't roast me but just how bad is a steel seat post?

If you were round the corner I would come and look at the bike and after you had punched me in the face for the low offer I'm sure we could have a cuppa and strike a deal.... Buying blind is such a pain though....

You're not buying blind, you are buying from a well respected, trustworthy and honourable member of the retrobike community.

Welcome to the site by the way.

Thank you for the welcome! As you point out I've just joined so I've no idea who this chap is and how reliable he is. No offence meant!

To be fair I like the attitude he's responded with and if he's still interested in dealing with me after the insulting initial offer I'm still interested if we can agree a delivered price we are both happy with..,

I can't wait to get this now....

I can't find the exact spec it should have been as there doesn't seem to be auk 1985 catalogue online anywhere.... Looking at the year before and after it seems Suntour Cyclone 2 gears but I like the Shimano that are on it.... Although campag nuovo gran sport looks like a nice option and was supplied on the competition in the 80's.... Thoughts?

With all due reverence to the 'King of the skip monkeys'. 1985 was pre mass market indexed shifting so everything was a bit pernickety, most of the basic designs from all the major companies had not changed since the early 70's....

So ya pays yer money and takes ya choice :!: :!: :!:

1985 was Dura-Ace indexed so why not stick with the big S.

It already has a 'modern' groupset on it, hyperglide, indexed shifting - whats new?
